VCU Health System's Speech Therapy Outpatient department is seeking a full time Speech Pathologist. The Speech Pathologist is an experienced therapist who is able to independently adapt intervention to meet specific patient's needs. The Speech Pathologist is able to provide coverage in their primary setting, but also as needed throughout the hospital/rehab/outpatient settings with minimal-moderate amount of support and training from mentors, peers or the manager. The Speech Pathologist assumes basic leadership roles within the department, demonstrates flexibility, exercises good judgment, problem solving and works collaboratively with colleagues. A Speech Pathologist participates in department projects or events in an efficient and productive manner. They not only attend educational activities, but also provide in-service education to other staff. Speech Pathologist begins developing the skills to provide student supervision with mentorship of an experienced student supervisor. The Speech Pathologist can participate in research activities at the department level, being mentored as needed by a more experienced Speech Pathologist.
Performs the following for patients with mild to moderately complex communications and/or swallowing disorders - schedule frequency and intensity of therapy; select assessment instruments and administer assessment; interpret results; complete documentation; plan and carry out treatment strategies; develop long- and short-term goals; perform patient/family/staff education; report at patient/family/team conferences; and terminate therapy when appropriate.
Supervisor or SLP II or higher provides advice/guidance/training regarding clinical skills, professional practice, ethical behaviors, billing, caseload management, educational opportunities, documentation and patient care for patient issues or when requested by staff.
SLPs with their CCC's may provide student supervision if deemed competent to do so by Department Manager or Coordinator of Student Interns.
Ability to cross cover units not assigned as SLP's primary units of responsibility, after being oriented to unit and deemed competent for that patient population (if significantly different from typical unit assignments); this includes covering outpatient, rehab and inpatient units in addition to SLP's primary location assignment.
Possible weekend rotations required.
Master's Degree from an ASHA accredited program in Speech and Language Pathology
Competes required learning exchange courses
Current license by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a SLP
Current CCC in SLP.  For CFY incumbents, completion of CFY and awarded a CCC, at conclusion of 1st year of employment
CPR certification
New graduate/CFY's to SLP's with less than two (2) years of experience
Strong Clinical Fellowship Year candidates will be considered
Previous clinical experience with evaluation/ treatment of neurogenic, motor speech, linguistic/cognitive communication disorders and swallowing disorders
Previous experience performing swallow studies including MBS and bedside assessments
Previous experience planning and executing treatment
Minimum of two (2) years of experience
Clinical rotations during graduate training in medical setting
Previous experience with computer-based documentation systems
Previous experience with trach management as related to swallowing and communication disorders
Previous experience managing complex swallowing and/or communication, linguistic/cognitive disorders
Previous work experience in a critical care setting
Experience with dysphasia including MBS and bedside swallow evaluations
Previous work experience in a similar practice setting (e.g. critical care, long term care, outpatient, etc.)
