VCU Health System's Sleep Lab is seeking a full time Respiratory / Sleep Therapist. The Respiratory / Sleep Therapist provides safe and reliable pulmonary, sleep diagnostic testing, and effective respiratory care as an advanced practitioner for neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and/or geriatric populations in accordance to discipline training, Clinical Practice Guidelines, and hospital standards and protocols. Serves as a respiratory care and sleep medicine technical resource and educator for patients, caregivers, hospital staff and students.
Follows documented physician orders for sleep study operations.
Practices within the boundaries of the regulations governing the practice of sleep medicine and respiratory care in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Practice is guided by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the National Board for Respiratory Care, and VCUHS policies and procedures and established practice guidelines.
Identifies and corrects artifact during sleep study operations.
Determines when to implement therapy during sleep testing operations.
Scores sleep testing data with 85% or better agreement rate with the Medical Director.
Coordinates the scheduling of procedures and distributes daily workloads.
Calls manufacturer for equipment troubleshooting advice.
Cardiopulmonary assessment and monitoring, including during emergency response; airway care; consulting with physicians and interdisciplinary team members regarding the appropriateness of the patient care plan
Maintain work areas in a clean and well stocked manner.
With RPSGT credential – the employee mentors polysomnographic technicians and teaches them about relevant respiratory therapy equipment, sleep study scoring, recording, hook-up procedures as well as artifact recognition, correction and may serve as a mentor and instruct new hire technologists (RPSGTs) in procedures specific to VCUHS Center for Sleep Medicine.
Depending on work assignment, may be required to work in respiratory care as an RRT in absence of sleep testing needs, may rotate shifts and work on weekends and holidays.
Education, training and/or experience that has satisfied the eligibility requirements for the National Board for Respiratory Care (or its predecessor organizations)
Licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Respiratory Therapist
Current registry from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)
Current CPR certification as required by practice setting
Current RPSGT (Must obtain within 4 months of hire)
One (1) year of experience functioning as a Respiratory Therapist
Sleep medicine experience as a sleep technician/technologist
Current registry from the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) for Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT)
Current related credentials from the National Board for respiratory Care (NBRC) or National Asthma Educator Certification Board (NAECB)
Current ACLS and/or PALS
Two (2) years of experience functioning as a Diagnostic Respiratory Therapist
Two (2) years of experience functioning as an RPSGT Certified Sleep Technologist
Previous affiliation or work experience in a similar practice setting
Bachelor's Degree in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited program
