The First Assistant in a surgical operation is an advanced trained and certified individual who is able to participate in and actively assist the surgeon in completing the operation safely and expeditiously by helping to provide exposure, maintain hemostasis, and other technical functions.
Assists in operations under the direction of the surgeon to make incisions and close surgical sites, manipulate or remove tissues, implant surgical devices or drains, suction the surgical site, place catheters, clamp or cauterize vessels or tissue, and apply dressings to surgical site.
High School Diploma or equivalent; and
Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology Program, military training program, Master of Surgical Assisting Degree, or LPN
CSFA (Certified Surgical First Assist) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
Experience as a Surgical Technologist or as a CSFA
One or more years of experience as CSFA
Experience at a Level 1 or 2 Trauma Center
Experience in cardiac, robotics, vascular, orthopedics, neurosurgery, transplant surgery
