VCU Health System's Performance Improvement is seeking a full time Performance Improvement Coordinator, Sr. to provide leadership, facilitation, coordination and education for performance improvement activities and groups within the VCU Health System. Using proven PI and statistical tools and methods, assist in designing projects; coordinating and/or performing data collection; analyzing and reporting/interpreting data results (when appropriate, uses statistical process control); developing and implementing action plans and documenting the project and outcomes in written format. Assist in identifying performance improvement opportunities within the organization, prioritizing the opportunities, collaborating with leaders and clinicians, planning and initiating intervention collaboratively and independently and monitoring the impact.



Demonstrates safe behaviors for error prevention in everyday practice, including strong attention to detail, communicating clearly, having a questioning attitude, and being accountable. 

Effectively facilitates and promotes the VCU Health System performance improvement processes including but not limited to participation in the initiatives of the VCUHS, the Joint Commission (TJC), the Virginia Health Quality Center (VHQC), Center for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) and other agencies.

Effectively moves assigned team forward as a function of their role such as team leader, facilitator and/or member. Team membership includes, but is not limited to, participation in the initiatives of the VCUHS, the Joint Commission (TJC), the Virginia Health Quality Center (VHQC), Center for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS), and other agencies.

Effectively leads, directs, educates, facilitates and utilizes performance improvement and other tools to meet goals of projects and teams within the VCU Health System. Directs and designs projects; coordinates data collection; analyzes and reports results using statistical process control as appropriate; develops and directs implementation of action plans and documents the project and outcomes in written format.

Uses data, information systems & other methods to display information.

Maintains & updates knowledge base. Completes a minimum of 15 contact hours of continuing education in nursing, performance improvement, data management/analysis, patient safety, project management, and/or quality engineering. This could include CE for related certifications such as CPHQ, PMP, etc.

Performs other duties as assigned and/or participates in special projects in order to support the mission of VCUHS and the Department.




Master's Degree in a healthcare field, Business Administration, Quality Engineering or related field from an accredited program

Two (2) of the following specialty certifications are required within one (1) year of hire:

Project Management Professional (PMP)

Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ)

Safety Fellowship

Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification

PI/Safety related ASQ certifications

Certified Professional in Patient Safety

Or other relevant certification

Current license in the Commonwealth of Virginia (e.g. Registered Nurse, Pharmacist, Nurse Practitioner, Registered Dietitian or similar) if candidate holds a professional license required

Minimum of four (4) years' experience PI/Patient Safety with at least two (2) years leading the scope of work in a specialty area

Experience utilizing advanced methodology and/or leads Root Cause Analysis as a certified Root Cause Analyst

Experience utilizing internal and external initiatives to lead/direct complex groups/ projects and restructuring processes to make them understandable, lean and efficient



Previous experience with organization-wide performance improvement and/or coordinating projects in an academic medical center with a wide variety of services
