VCU Health System's Chemistry is seeking a (full time/ part time/ hourly) Pathology Technician. This person receives specimens in the laboratory and performs pre-analytical specimen manipulation/preparation for analysis which includes but is not limited to accessioning orders via LIS/CIS, verifying technical specimen acceptability, and performing pre-analytical procedures. Pre-analytical procedures may include alliquoting specimens for technical analysis, plating specimens for microbiologic growth, preparing smears, preparing specimens for shipping utilizing knowledge of specimen handling and shipping of dangerous goods in accordance with laboratory policy in an accurate, safe and timely manner.

Provides support services for the clinical laboratory by resolving problems with orders and/or specimens and by responding to telephone inquiries for test results and specimen collection criteria. Laboratory support functions may also include but are not limited to developing and maintaining ordering and inventory processes/systems; documenting and reviewing attendance; monitoring overtime reports at the direction of the Manager; submitting referral testing invoices for payment; editing laboratory procedures with supervisor direction; providing data entry assistance and general glassware maintenance. May assist in the accessioning area as required, provide assistance with POC testing needs, waived testing training and preparation and troubleshooting glucose meters and returning them to the units. Duties are performed in a customer-focused, courteous and efficient manner. Performs other duties as assigned by team leaders, supervisors, and departmental Managers.

Qualifications

 

Required

High School Diploma or equivalent

Minimum of 2 years of laboratory experience using basic laboratory principles and procedures and handling specimens

Previous experience using a personal computer and entering data

 

Preferred

One year of post high school education in a Health Science field
