Lab Information Specialist Position Overview
The Lab Information Specialist acts as a resource and facilitates communication with clients and laboratory staff to enhance laboratory services in part by providing current laboratory information to all clients through effective maintenance of procedure manuals, LIS resources, specimen requirements and ordering instructions.
The Lab Info Specialist also ensures accurate documentation of laboratory processes. This involves maintaining phone logs in order to document relevant details of all incoming phone calls; responding to requests for test results in a timely manner; maintaining and administering a system of obtaining written provider orders; and maintaining and administering a system of yearly revalidation and updating of standing orders. This role also includes billing-related responsibilities such as assisting with manual entry of charges for referred tests and other charges and assisting with coding (ICD-9) research of laboratory accounts - including following up with providers submitting orders with no codes or invalid codes and providing coders with accurate and timely coding information.
This is a highly administrative role which requires good typing skills, collaborative behavior with the staff, the ability to work with minimal supervision and excellent communication skills – both verbal and written.
For this position in Lab Outreach, some shifts start as early as 6:00am and some shifts end as late at 8:00pm. Candidates must have the availability to work all shifts within these hours. Weekend rotation coverage is also required.
· High School diploma or equivalent
· 1 year laboratory experience or experience in related field is required
· Knowledge of billing procedures and requirements for Medicare, Medicaid, primary/secondary insurance and institutional accounts, preferred
· Previous clinical laboratory experience, preferred
