Outpatient Surgical Technologist Position Opportunity Overview

 

The Outpatient Surgical Technologist serves as a member of the surgical team working with Surgeons, anesthesia providers, RN's and other surgical personnel in delivering patient care and assuming appropriate responsibilities before, during, and after surgery in accordance with the Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) and AST Standards of Practice. There is no weekend/holiday/night call associated with the outpatient center.

 

Successful candidates will have knowledge of procedure and technique in caring for patients, equipment and supplies; the ability to communicate well on the telephone; and can demonstrate aseptic technique, scrub, gown and glove counts; and other aspects of scrub role under the AORN and CST guidelines.

 

As a Surgical Technologist you will have the opportunity to:

 

·        Functions as a Surgical Technician in minimally invasive specialties demonstrating responsibilities that include assisting in direct patient care in the operating room

·        Anticipate the needs of the surgeon, pass appropriate instruments, and assist in exposure of the surgical field

·        Select and prepare appropriate supplies and equipment for the surgical cases and operate all surgical equipment

·        Organize instrumentation and the sterile field

·        Perform all surgical counts consistently, including the "safety count"

·        Performs wound closure (subcutaneous and skin) under the direct supervision of the surgeon

QUALIFICATIONS

 

One of the following is required:

 

·       Graduate of nationally accredited, approved by the OHA education program for surgical tech and holds Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTA), or

·        Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) licensed by Oregon State Board of Nursing, or

·        Completed training for surgical techs in the military and has completed 16 hours continuing education every 2 years, or

·        Providing documentation showing surgical tech practice during at least 2 of the 3 years immediately preceding 01/01/2017 and completes 16 hours of continuing education every 2 years

Experience

 

·        Documentation showing surgical tech practice during at least 2 of the 3 years immediately preceding 01/01/2017 (unless certified as a CST by the NBSTA or an LPN licensed by Oregon State Board of Nursing. With a CST or an LPN – the experience requirement is waived)

·       Preferred:  Able to scrub minimally invasive procedures as related to Orthopedics, General, ENT and GYN specialities.  Preferred experience in an Ambulatory Surgery Center.

Certifications/Licenses

 

·        Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) – required if no experience

·        Basic Life Support (BLS) certified by the American Heart Association (AHA) required upon start

·       Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) licensed by Oregon State Board of Nursing –  required if no experience or CST certification
