Job Summary:     

§  In a patient care setting, the RRT will perform specific duties and responsibilities as outlined below. Under medical supervision, the individual will be required to deliver respiratory care  and cardiology services to patients from neonatal to geriatric age and in all areas of the hospital, both inpatient and outpatient.

§  Competency standards of performance that are required for that area to which the practitioner is assigned must be maintained as per policy.

§  The RRT may be required at times to supervise and be responsible for the work of other respiratory care practitioners and EKG technicians. The practitioner may be assigned to orientation and in-service education.                    

§  The RRT is responsible to the Respiratory Care/ Sleep Lab Manager. The practitioner works under the supervision of the Medical Director for Cardiopulmonary Services or other special Care areas and carries out assigned duties and responsibilities according to the policies, procedures, and standards approved by the Medical Director. This individual is expected to perform duties and responsibilities outlined below with minimal or minimal or indirect supervision and will be requires to make some independent decisions.

§  The RRT will be responsible for helping cover assigned shifts as well as possible call shifts. All benefit eligible employees will cover weekends, holidays, and call when necessary.


Essential Job Functions:

§  Reviews existing data in the patient record including admission and current respiratory care orders, patient history, physical examination, pulmonary function values, blood gas results, additional laboratory data, and ECG.

§  Collects and evaluates any additional pertinent clinical information by inspection

Palpitation, percussion, auscultation, patient interview.

§  Views chest x-ray to determine presence of or changes in consolidation, atelectasis, pneumothorax, and position of endotrahceal tube.

§  Can perform and evaluate bedside spirometry, pulmonary mechanics, weaning parameter, and peak flows.

§  Will recommend the collection of additional pertinent data through chest x-ray, blood gas analysis, pulmonary function studies, oximtery, metabolic assessment, and other laboratory data.

§  Can perform and evaluate basic spirometry and spirometry pre and post bronchodilator.

§  Performs ECG recordings and Holter Monitor setup.

§  Meets competency standards in the performance and evaluation of blood gas sampling and analysis.

§  By utilizing critical thinking skills and protocols, is able to determine appropriate therapy and goals for the identified pathophysiological state.


§  Can select, assemble, and check the following equipment for proper function, operation, and cleanliness, including correction of any malfunctions:

a. oxygen administration devices, aerosol generators, environmental devices, flow meters and regulators, blenders, cylinders and bulk systems, compressors, end tidal C02 devices, and analyzers.

b. Resuscitation devices and artificial airways: manual resuscitators, demand valves, oral and nasal airways, tracheal tubes, suction catheters, and specimen collectors.

c. Ventilators and Patient Breathing Circuits: positive pressure devices, mechanical ventilators, and incentive breathing devices.

d. Monitoring devices: manometers and gauges, respirometers, hemodynamic, oximeters, ECG recorders, Holter recorders.

§  Knows the procedures for disinfection and sterilization of equipment.

§  Can perform quality control procedures, trouble shoot, and complete documentation as required on the blood gas analyzers.

§  Explains planned therapy and goals to the patient and the patient's family following the AIDET principles.

§  Conducts prescribed therapeutic procedures to achieve maintenance of a patent airway, including maintenance of adequate humidification and use of appropriate oro-nasopahryngeal airways, and changing tracheostomy tubes.

§  Conducts prescribed therapeutic procedures to achieve removal of bronchopulmonary secretions and administer prescribed pharmacological agents.

§  Conducts prescribed therapeutic procedures to achieve adequate and spontaneous and artificial ventilation.

§  Conducts prescribed therapeutic procedures to achieve adequate oxygenation, including adjustment of oxygen concentration, adjustment of PEEP/CPAP, and prevention of "iatrogenic" hypoxemia.

§  Will evaluate and monitor the patient's response to therapy, making necessary recommendations to the physician when needed.

§  Modifies treatment techniques after consulting with the physician, based on patient response to IPPB, incentive breathing devices, aerosol therapy, oxygen therapy, chest physiotherapy, and recommended modifications in respiratory care plan for mechanical ventilation.

§  Initiates, conducts, and modifies respiratory therapy techniques in an emergency situation, including CPR.

§  Is able to provide respiratory home care instruction, setup, and troubleshooting. Record therapy, charges, and results as required by hospital policy and regulating agencies; communicate information to appropriate members of the healthcare team.

§  Performs in-service training and the training and supervision of students.

§  In addition to the preceding job duties and responsibilities, the RRT may be asked to perform additional duties and tasks as directed by the department director and outlined in the Respiratory Procedure and Policy Manual

§  Accepts verbal and telephone orders from licensed physicians and physician assistants for procedures and practices within the scope of the department's practice.  These orders are entered according to policy including date and time received and read back.

§  Able to clarify orders when necessary.

§  Able to participate and take ownership in PI projects and quality improvement.

§  Able to chart according to policy and ensure accurate and concise information is included in the patient chart.



The National Board must recognize the individual for Respiratory Care as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT). Graduation from an AMA-accredited educational program for

Respiratory Therapy is required. The individual must be able to meet licensure requirements in the State of South Dakota and maintain their license. Basic Cardiac Life Support training will be completed on a biyearly basis. It is strongly recommended that the individual also complete ACLS and PALS. Proper and complete orientation to the department and hospital policies and procedures is required. Competency standards must be met as required by department policy. The RRT is required to maintain the competency standards as set by the department and hospital including adult, pediatric, and neonatal age groups in the following areas: mechanical ventilation, Arterial Blood gas analysis and drawing, via puncture and arterial lines, Respiratory Home Care, CPAP/BiPAP, and all other procedures and policies outlined in the department manuals.



§  This position is a night position with days off rotating as well. 6pm to 6:30am

§  The RRT will be responsible for helping cover assigned shifts as well as possible call shifts. All benefit eligible employees will cover weekends, holidays, and call when necessary.
