  • Job Duties and Responsibilities: Provides and coordinates didactic education to all staff and patients who require breastfeeding information in accordance with current research literature and national standards of care. At a minimum, provides bi-monthly in-services to staff regarding breastfeeding education, policies, procedures, etc. Develops documentation record to track patient progress/concerns. Performs and documents consultations for normal and complex lactation patients. Develops a feeding plan based on the individual needs and goals of the breastfeeding mother. Evaluates equipment related to breastfeeding. Maintains current breastfeeding reference materials as a resource for the healthcare team. Participates in the development of breastfeeding guidelines, protocols, and patient education materials. Participates in data collection and subsequent program development and implementation that improve outcomes for breastfeeding women and infants. Maintains statistics and conducts annual audits to determine breastfeeding initiation and continuation rates and the effects of changes in protocols. Acts as a liaison with patient, family, providers, and hospital staff. Also serves as an advocate for breastfeeding in the community. Is a clinical resource to staff and providers Sets standards of practice and patient care for selected patient populations Assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care needs of the patient. Document nursing care in compliance with policies procedures and practices established by the Nursing Department and the hospital. Performs nursing care consistent with the needs of neonatal, pediatric/ adolescent, and adult patients requiring treatment and care. Attend staff meetings and in-services. Maintains clinical competencies in the designated patient care area 


    Education: Graduation from an NLN accredited school of nursing BSN required Licensure/Certification/Registration: 
    • Current Massachusetts RN license 
    • BLS (AHA) certification NRP within six months of hire 
    • IBCLC Certification by International Board of Lactation Consultants Examiner 
    Experience: Recent and relevant obstetrical experience. Knowledge of accepted lactation consultant standards and practice. Maintains expertise and certification through appropriate continuing education.
