Job Details:
  • The Cook is responsible for preparing food to provide nutrition and variety to the residents of Cedar Manor. This position coordinates resident involvement in the kitchen and dining room.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    These duties and responsibilities described below represent the general tasks performed on a daily basis; other tasks may be assigned.

    §  Prepare food daily as outlined in the weekly menu

    §  Assist with menu planning, reviewing and adjusting menus for special events and holidays

    §  Alter and adapt recipes to accommodate special dietary needs of residents or to improve recipes; all recipes should be prepared with little or no sodium (salt)

    §  Identify foods and supplies needed for the next week's menu and report it to chef

    §  Maintain a written inventory of dry goods, refrigerated and frozen foods, non-food supplies, dishes, and utensils

    §  Prepare meats for storage and portion control upon delivery; ensure proper storage of all delivered foods

    §  Maintain a clean and orderly kitchen

    §  Monitor portion control to meet resident's requests and minimize waste

    §  Ensure proper handling, labeling, and storage of all foods for proper infection control

    §  Ensure attractive presentation of food on plate before serving

    §  Maintain an accurate record of changeable meals

    §  Notify the chef if there is a malfunction of equipment/appliances

    §  Train, supervise, and assign work to dietary aides

    §  Clean kitchen area according to state regulations and standards

    §  Adhere to and carry out all hospital, state, and federal policies, procedures, and regulations to ensure compliance

    §  Report all on the job injuries to chef before the end of the work shift on the day the injury occurs

    §  Practice safety in working with and around kitchen equipment

    §  Establish and maintain constructive relationships with co-workers, residents, families, and visitors

    §  Maintain the confidentiality of verbal and written information pertaining to residents, facility operations, and personnel

    §  Maintain a strong working knowledge of OSHA-MSDS sheets and procedures, fire and safety procedures, and state food-handling and kitchen regulations

    §  Maintain an up-to-date knowledge on how to operate kitchen appliances

    §  Attend required hospital-wide orientations, meetings, and in-services

    §  Demonstrate a commitment to flexible work scheduling

    Education and Experience

    Minimum Required Education: High school diploma or equivalent

    Preferred Education: Graduation from an accredited culinary school or program

    Experience: A minimum of 4 years of experience with commercial or institutional cooking.  Experience cooking at a long term care or healthcare facility preferred.

    Applicant must have a current State Food-Handler's Certificate
