Job Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Lead Animal Technician and/or Animal Facility Supervisor, independently implements daily work assignments. This responsibility includes; basic animal husbandry, assembling sufficient and appropriate supplies, verifying that daily tasks are properly completed, maintaining areas according to USDA, PHS, AAALAC and Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute regulations and standards and recognizing inconsistencies in SOPs and reporting them. The animal technician acts as back up to the Lead Animal Technician for all emergency or critical situations and possesses a working knowledge of husbandry/housing situations and environmental control systems.  Demonstrates the ability to independently perform all required duties of the facility with only general supervision.

Position Requirements:
Education: High school diploma or GED required.  Prefer ALAT certification or ability to become certified in one year.
Experience: One year of applicable animal care experience in a research or animal laboratory setting.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Duties require manual dexterity, mechanical ability and consciencious attitude and concern for animals. Must be capable of lifting and moving cages, feed, supplies and equipment of at least 50 lbs. Ability to operate properly a variety of cleaning, sanitizing, sterilizing equipment (including cage washers, autoclaves, floorscrubber, etc) must be capable of proper handling of rodents and free of animal-related allergens. Must be able to work weekends or evenings, if necessary.
