The purpose of the Health Information Management Technician II (HIM Technician II) is to provide: expertise in coding of diagnoses and procedures for all patient types according to established standards, policies, and coding conventions; abstracting of pertinent information from the patient record; comprehensive qualitative and quantitative record review and deficiency analysis; support in other health information management functions of the department.
Experience: Two years of coding experience including both outpatient and inpatient coding.
Education: Associate Degree in Health Information Technology or related field. Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and ICD-9-CM and CPT coding principles.
Certification: RHIT/RHIA, CCS or RHIT/RHIA/CCS-eligible. Education and experience may be considered in the absence of certification.
Skills / Abilities: Ability to work well in a fast-paced, demanding environment. Knowledge of health information management/medical record standards of practice, including ICD-9-CM coding, DRGs, release of information, filing systems, analysis, abstracting, and information retrieval. Good computer skills. Strong organizational abilities and mental agility.
