The purpose of the position is to support a cutting-edge pharmacogenomics research project focused on investigating the genetic and molecular determinants that contribute to human variation in statin drug response. The results of this research could yield significant improvement in the ability to identify those individuals most likely to achieve cardiovascular benefit from statin treatment, as well as investigate the potential future use of statins in the treatment of cancer.

The fellowship position is within the laboratory of Dr. Marisa Medina and involves two major project areas:
1) The investigation of novel mechanisms of RNA regulation responsible for the maintenance of intracellular cholesterol homeostasis and sterol metabolism under both normal physiological conditions and in response to cholesterol lowering drugs using molecular techniques, in vitro model systems and potentially animal models.
2) Identification of human gene variants that impact RNA regulation and thus underlie inter-individual variation in plasma cholesterol and response to cholesterol lowering drugs.
