Job Summary: The Coding Supervisor, HIM oversees the medical coding process including hospital based inpatient, outpatient, observation, day surgery and emergency department services within the main hospital campus; and the coding for provider-based physician practices, hospital and professional components.    Responsible for hiring, evaluation of performance, continuing education and training of the coding staff and assigned working team leads in the appropriate levels of coding, documentation, compliance and data quality.  Monitors staff workload, attendance, education and productivity.  Assures the coding section has adequate staff coverage, using resources strategically to maintain desired turnaround, quality and levels of DNFB.

Requirements: Associate degree required in Health Information Technology with accreditation by the American Health Information Management association.  CCS certification by the American Health Information Management Association required.  3 or more years of previous hospital coding experience in inpatient, outpatient and physician E&M coding.  Must be familiar with all charting requirements, including acute rehab facility documentation requirements.  Knowledge of JCAHO and state regulations for both acute, acute rehab and hospital based physician practices.

Skills:  Intermediate to advanced computer knowledge and experience with use of an encoder/grouper and a hospital billing and abstracting system.  Experience with word processing and spreadsheet required, experience with database software helpful.   Associates degree in HIM strongly preferred, bachelor's degree desirable.
