Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Annual, Major and Planned Giving manages the development and production of proposals, stewardship reports, and philanthropic business plans in support of fundraising efforts directed towards Children’s National’s major gift prospects under $1M. The SAD plays a key a role in strategy development and in positioning proposals for effective results. In this role, he/she will work collaboratively with Children’s National leadership, physicians, scientists, and Foundation gift officers to conceive and produce compelling philanthropic proposals. The SAD is an integral participant in “visioning” sessions with institutional leadership to research and create innovative new programs. As a senior member of the major gifts team, he/she is responsible for developing and managing the annual work plan to successfully produce proposals, stewardship reports and special writing projects. In coordination with the research team and gift officers, he/she will lead production of comprehensive prospect/donor profiles. He/she will manage the work of contract employees to ensure high quality results. The SAD must have a strong customer service orientation, and be skilled in communicating with a diverse range of professionals. The ability to comprehend and synthesize complex medical and scientific concepts and translate for lay audiences. The ability to work in a fast paced environment with tight deadlines is essential.
Bachelor’s Degree in English or other related field. Master’s Degree preferred. 7 years of progressive related experience.
Demonstrated strength in creative and/or persuasive writing. Interest and experience in research as demonstrated by graduate work or similar activity. Proven record of successful proposal writing or the equivalent. Skilled in communicating effectively with a diverse range of professionals (physicians, scientists, development officers and administrators). Ability to gather information from a variety of sources through interviews and outside research, and then conceptualize and synthesize it all into reports, proposals and other writing. Ability to set priorities and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Ability to work on several projects at once. Ability to take initiative, work independently and think creatively. Ability also to work collaboratively in a team to produce finished products. Strong organizational and project management skills. Strong editing skills. Attentiveness to detail. Strong customer service-oriented work style.
