One year research fellowship in structural heart disease and shared decision making

Dr. Megan Coylewright, MD MPH

 

We are looking for applicants with:

1.     Quantitative analytical skills

2.     Knowledge of research methodology

a.      Experience interpreting peer-reviewed literature, tables, figures, trials, registries, etc.

3.     Proficiency in English language

a.      Effective oral and written communication

b.     Academic writing experience: thesis, grant, peer-reviewed literature, etc.

4.     Academic presentation experience

a.      Oral and written professional presentation

b.     Professional society meetings / conferences / forums

c.      Academic poster presentations

5.     Proficiency in EndNote, Excel, Microsoft Office (word, PowerPoint, outlook), other software, etc.

a.      Proficiency in EndNote, Excel, and PowerPoint is critical

6.     Experience with systematic searching of biomedical literature databases

a.      Ability to navigate PubMed on own and communicate search goals to librarians

7.     Interest in independent academic writing and investigation

8.     Demonstrated interest in shared decision making

a.      Prior work / projects

b.     Vision for role of shared decision making research in professional future

9.     Research coordinator/research assistant skillsets

a.      Polite, approachable, personable, adaptable, professional, etc.

b.     Ability to redirect through incorporating feedback, constructive criticism, etc.

c.      Experience working with people of all professional levels

                                                    i.     Capability to work with administrative staff, physicians, housestaff, fellows, researchers, leadership, etc.

d.     Flexibility and professionalism in the clinic and in the community when enrolling patients/participants in studies

e.      Knowledge of the IRB, protocol writing, modifications/continuing review, etc.

f.      Willingness to complete tasks of varying complexity to further the work of the structural heart disease program, including filing, scheduling, retrieving articles, submitting manuscripts, saving clinical images, etc.

10.  Ability/confidence to work independently and with autonomy

In addition to study coordinator/research assistant responsibilities, the position includes the opportunity to conceptualize and lead independent research projects both within the Dartmouth community and in partnership with academic medical centers across the Northern New England region. Fellows will partner with researchers from The Dartmouth Institute, primarily from the Preference Laboratory, to collaborate on analysis and dissemination of project findings. The fellow will gain increasing autonomy to write and publish findings as well as submit abstracts for presentation of original work at both regional and national professional society meetings. Pending interest, the fellow will have weekly opportunities to shadow Dr. Coylewright in the outpatient cardiology clinic, on the inpatient wards, and in the cardiac catheterization laboratory. The fellow will interface with many members of the Heart and Vascular Center, including interventional cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, echocardiographers, trainees, medical students, nursing, researchers, hospital/administrative leadership, etc. in order to both conduct research and assist Dr. Coylewright in the building of state-of-the-art clinical programs. In particular, as technology evolves and new therapies become available to patients with structural heart diseases, the fellow will play an integral role in the creation and testing of decision aids with both patients and physicians.
