  • The Psychiatric Liaison Counselor interacts with individuals requesting or referred for mental health/chemical dependency treatment. Completes in-depth evaluations and psycho-social assessments and determines the appropriateness for treatment. Coordinates admissions and referrals to related services. Provides individual/group therapy when necessary. Coordinates schedules and functions of emergency psychiatric evaluators.  

    •  Serves as primary liaison to the Emergency Room  (E.R). and medical floors for evaluation of patients for mental health and/or chemical dependency problems. Conducts in-house consults within 24 hours of request. Conducts E.R. consults within 1/2 hour of request. Presents treatment recommendations to attending physician and other appropriate sources.
    • Conducts in-depth evaluations to determine treatment needs. Completes psycho-social assessment, appropriate analysis and testing. Completes and charts diagnostic summary and reports to attending physician and appropriate sources. Presents necessary treatment options to patients and their families.
    • Provides assistance in the coordination of insurance related activities to include: verification of eligibility of insured, including date of policy and specific benefits for inpatient, outpatient and aftercare treatment, providing clinical information for the purposes of pre-certification and the need for continued stay, and documentation reflecting understanding of the need to update insurers and external review agencies.
    • Provides assistance in the streamlining of the intake/admission process.
    • Attends all meetings and committees that pertain to the intake/admission process. Identifies problems areas regarding intake/admission process and seeks resolution with appropriate staff/departments. Assists in the development of new and/or revised forms to maintain efficiency of intake/admission process.
    • Provides skilled group and individual therapy to Partial Hospitalization Program patients. Evaluates and documents the effectiveness of therapy as it relates to patient's treatment goals.
    • Provides assistance in the planning of ongoing efforts to enhance referral development and to develop new sources of referrals. Develops and maintains files of community-based groups and resources relevant to psychiatric and chemical dependency services.
    • Acts as an educational resource to physicians, nursing staff and other hospital personnel; evidencing accurate clinical knowledge and understanding of policies and procedures. Conducts community and professional education presentations as assigned.
    • Reviews and assesses evaluations performed by Emergency Psychiatric Evaluators. Provides feedback.
    • Participates in recruitment of Emergency Psychiatric Evaluators, provides orientation and training.
    • Maintains statistical information on all assessments/consults.
    • Assures accurate and timely billing of services provided.
    • Prepares schedule for Emergency Psychiatric Evaluators.

    Master Degree in mental health counseling or social work required. Current licensure in the State of Maryland required. Over one year experience conducting psycho-social assessments and insurance pre-certification is required. A background in dual diagnosis and addictions counseling is preferred. Knowledge of community resources is necessary. Must maintain an independent license certifide professional counselor, LCSW, etc. Word processing, hopital information systems. Oral and written communication skills in English Clinical diagnostic skills, Must be able to succinctly summarize patient information and effectively document psycho-social assessments, psychiatric evaluations and other patient interactions.
