The Patient Safety Assistant provides continual observation of patients, to ensure a safe environment for patients during their hospital stay.  The employee in this position must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide a safe environment.   Areas served include psychiatric department, emergency room and other patient care areas.  Must be able to work under pressure.  Must possess the ability to communicate observed changes in behavior/activity to the Registered Nurse.  Will work with patients needing continuous observation including patients with dementia, Alzheimer's and suicidal ideation.  Job Duties include but are not limited to:  Maintains an uninterrupted line of sight with the patient, positions self in patient room at bedside to maintain constant visual observation of the patient.  Never leaves the patient alone or out of sight unless specifically instructed by the nurse.  Communicates in a professional manner and demonstrates respect for patient, families/significant other and other health care members.  Accurately and legibly records data collected and notifies RN of any behavioral changes including violent behavior.  

Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED.  Must be able to sit and walk for long periods of time.  Must be able to handle the stress of working with non compliant or out of control patients.  Must complete CPR and CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) training. 

The Staffing Registry of EAMC is designed to create a pool of staff that can be used on a temporary basis in a number of areas of the hospital.  Those who are hired as a Staffing Registry employee are not guaranteed permanent employment with EAMC.  This position is not eligible for benefits.  The base rate of pay during the training period is $7.25/hour.
