POSITION SUMMARY: Provides education related to all aspects of patient care and services to staff with a primary focus in Emergency Medicine.  Assists with the development of policies, procedures and departmental directive related to patient care and nursing process.  Participates in housewide workgroups and committees to provide clinical expertise and input.  Assists with patient care during times of  high volume, high acuity and when demand has exceeded current ED clinical resources.  The Emergency Department is a high acuity, fast paced regional referral ED.  Patients vary from independent mobility to total care and are of all ages.  Patients may present with acute, non-acute or chronic illnesses and injuries.

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED: Registered professional nurse currently licensed in Maine.  A Master's degree in nursing required.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED: Ability to complete a comprehensive age specific nursing care to the population of patients within the assigned unit/area. BLS required, ACLS and PALS required,  TNCC required within one year. ED experience required

Desirable qualifications:  HazMat, SANE, MOAB, CEN. 

Additional qualifications:  Critical thinking, computer use, customer relations skills

OTHER SKILLS REQUIRED: Is jointly responsible with the Department Head Nurse for the clinical and professional objectives of the unit.  The Clinical Nurse Specialist actively participates on the Patient Response Team(s) applicable to their area(s), an interdisciplinary team with membership from administration, nursing, medical staff, fiscal services, quality improvement, information services and other clinical/support services as necessary.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Capacity to concentrate in a busy and often stressful environment. Visual Acuity, color vision, hearing acuity, and tactile sensation are necessary to perform assessments. The ability to read English, manual dexterity, and visual acuity is required.   The nurse must be able to lift 10 lbs. with one hand to attach IV pumps to IV poles.  Reaching and stretching may be required at any time.  The nurse must possess the degree of total body strength and flexibility to assist patients with transfers and mobility.  The nurse must be able to lift a leg of 20 lbs. to assisting with a total lift of 200+ lbs. patient with other health care workers.
