HOSPITAL MEDICINE PROGRAM
Under the supervision of the Program Manager of the Advanced Practice Provider Program and clinical direction from designated supervising physicians and indirect supervision from the Medical Director of the Advanced Practice Provider Program and the Vice President of Medical Affairs, the Advanced Practice Provider evaluates and medically manages adolescent through geriatric patients admitted to Mercy Hospital in accordance with physician directives, medical bylaws and established protocols and within practice guidelines established by the Board of Medicine and the board of Nursing. Works collaboratively with ancillary services to ensure the safety of patients under their care. The incumbent may have access to highly confidential patient, employee and/or Mercy proprietary information, and must handle & protect the information in accordance with hospital & system policies, HIPAA requirements and the highest level of ethical standards. The incumbent is responsible for reporting all security events, potential events, or other security risks to the organization. The incumbent is responsible for participation in and completion of all patient safety initiatives appropriate to the position, and conducts all job responsibilities according to the Mission and Values of Mercy Hospital.
Physician Assistants: Must be certified or eligible for certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. Must be licensed or license eligible by the Maine State Board of Medicine. ACLS certification required.
Nurse Practitioners: Must be certified or eligible for certification by ANCC or AANP, licensed as a RN by the State of Maine and have approval from the Board of Nursing to practice medicine. ACLS certification required. Prepared as a Family Nurse Practitioner or an Adult Nurse Practitioner.
PA/NP: Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills as the incumbent relates to patients, their families and significant others, physicians, interdisciplinary staff, as well as administrative and ancillary support staff of the hospital. Must demonstrate excellent analytical and problem solving skills, gather data, determine and implement appropriate actions with oversight by the physician. Must demonstrate judgment and initiative while operating during demanding situations, to treat patients of various age groups and with varying health problems. Must have high degree of accountability of practice methods and results. Must show willingness to pursue and expand knowledge base in many aspects of medicine. Must be flexible with scheduling demands of the position. Should possess excellent writing skills and be proficient in medical terminology. Knowledge of basic computer skills required.
