The work involves administering anesthesia to patients in the operating room or other anesthetizing locations in the Erie County Medical Center Corporation. The incumbent legally administers potentially lethal drugs to patients, assists in the administration of and administers various anesthesia. Work is performed under the general supervision of a qualified anesthesiologist. Partial supervision is exercised over a number of subordinate personnel. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Administers anesthesia as selected and directed by a qualified Anesthesiologist;
Assists patients during pre and post-anesthesia periods;
Advises patients of effects and after effects of particular types of anesthesia;
Starts IV infusions and checks these treatments as directed;
Maintains, cleans and keeps in proper operating condition all anesthesiology equipment;
Inserts endotracheal tubes in the intensive care unit and emergency room when necessary;
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of various anesthesia agents and their applications; good knowledge of anesthesiology equipment; ability to administer general anesthetics and to apply inhalation and resuscitation techniques; ability to supervise; ability to work under pressure; dependability; resourcefulness; physically capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
Graduation from a registered School of Professional Nursing and graduation from a Nurse Anesthesia Program accredited by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists.
Possession of a license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse issued by the New York State Department of Education at time of appointment; and:
Completion of an accredited Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist program and board eligible for certification to practice as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist at time of appointment; and:
Possession of a current certification to practice as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist issued by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists within one (1) year of appointment; and:
Possession of an Advanced Life Support Certification at time of permanent appointment.
NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.
