DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The work involves assisting in the supervision of professional and non-professional nursing personnel and participating in furnishing nursing care to patients. This is a professional and administrative nursing position requiring a high degree of competence and tact. Under the general supervision of a professional nurse of high rank, exercises partial supervision over a number of professional and non-professional employees for technical guidance and work assignments on a nursing unit. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Assists in supervising nursing care of patients on a unit;
Reviews reports and instructions from previous tour and informs both professional and non-professional staff;
Receives, reviews, and reports on charts, notes, equipment lists, supplies, narcotic lists and census;
Makes rounds and notes condition and symptoms of patients for report to physicians;
Assigns work schedules for nurses, student nurses, and hospital aides, and instructs them in unit procedures;
Supervises maintenance of records on patients’ condition, medication, and treatment;
Prepares reports on census and consents for surgery;
Prepare property lists reports for nursing office;
Supervises care and comfort of patients, including linen changes, cleanliness of rooms, and moving and lifting.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of principles, procedures, techniques, and terminology of professional nursing;
Good knowledge of the biological, physical, social, and medical science as they relate to nursing care;
Good knowledge of the techniques of hospital unit administration;
Ability to assist in administration of nursing and non-nursing ancillary activities;
Ability to perform more difficult professional nursing duties;
Ability to maintain records and prepare reports;
Good public relations ability;
Sound professional judgment;
Physical capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing and a license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; plus:
a) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in nursing and six (6) months of professional nursing experience in the specialty area to which assignment is requested or:
b) One year of experience in the specialty area to which assignment is requested.
Specialty areas shall include: *critical care,* emergency nursing, medical/surgical, operating room, hemodialysis, ambulatory care and behavioral health.
*Please note that critical care experience will meet the minimum requirement for position in the post anesthesia recovery room and the cardiac catheterization laboratory*.
NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full time experience requirements.
