THIS POSITION REQUIRES THE CANDIDATE TO COMPLETE A NYS CENTRAL REGISTER DATABASE CHECK.  CANDIDATES (OR APPOINTEES) MAY NOT BE THE SUBJECT OF AN INDICATED REPORT WITH THE OFFICE OF CHILD AND FAMILY SERVICES.

 

ALSO MUST COMPLETE PMCS TRAINING 


The work involves supervising and providing professional social work services to patients in a mental health and/or mental retardation setting. The incumbent supervises and coordinates social work services provided in a clinical setting. The incumbent is responsible for treatment planning, placement coordination, discharge and intake planning, consultation and program planning with community agencies. Work is performed under the general supervision of higher ranking professional psychiatric and social work staff.  Supervision is exercised over a number of professional and para-professional social work staff. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

Assumes responsibility professionally for the supervision of a psychiatric

social work program of study, treatment and community activities;

Participates in the establishment and revision of social service and treatment

related policies ;

Assumes responsibility for the clinical supervision and training of students

and staff social workers in psychiatric social work;

Participates, from a clinical standpoint, in the interpretation of methods and

procedures for agencies responsible for carrying out recommendations of the

program in the community;

Consults with organized community groups in planning mental health programs;

Meets with professional and civil organizations to provide interpretation of 'u mental hygiene concepts and program functions;

Serves as a treatment team coordinator if assigned to an inpatient zone;

Carries a caseload of direct patient care.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES , SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Through knowledge of the principles, methods, procedures and practices of

psychiatric social work; thorough knowledge of community resources and

ability to use them effectively; ability to provide professional leadership for

psychiatric social workers and paraprofessionals in a clinical setting; ability

to organize, direct, supervise and coordinate social services provided within a

psychiatric treatment program; ability to prepare technical reports; ability to

analyze and evaluate clinical work of staff workers and make sound decisions;

ability to organize and operate a program of psychiatric social work; sound

professional judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the

position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATTONS:

Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or

university with a Master's degree in Social Work and two years of professional

social work experience, at least one year of which was in Psychiatric Social

Work.
