The work involves maintaining and operating radiology equipment, imaging, processing, monitoring and assisting a physician in the performance of specialized Interventional and Diagnostic Radiographic Studies which may involve practicing sterile technique. This is a specialized technical position with responsibility for handling complex equipment and assisting a radiologist, physician or technologist during specialized Angiographic, Interventional and Diagnostic imaging studies or radiographic studies in areas other than Special Procedures. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a qualified physician. Supervision is exercised over lower level technical staff. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: Assists physicians in fluoroscopy, sterile technique and specialized procedures; Sets up radiographic room for angiographic and other special procedures and prepares the necessary catheters, needles, guide wires, contrast media, anesthetic, etc. required for the study; Sets up special equipment used for diagnostic and intervention procedures, pressure injector, EKG equipment and mechanical thrombolic equipment; Administers ionizing radiation to obtain radiographic images for diagnostic and/or interventional purposes; Reviews images for technical accuracy and determines needs for retakes or additional views; Observes patient’s condition and reports significant information to nurse and/or physician; Orders, maintains and tracks inventory; Coordinates the scheduling and care of patients; Coordinates in-services with regards to new equipment and procedures with staff, nursing, etc; Assists in performing quality assurance as per mandated by appropriated governing agencies (i.e. Joint Commission, NYSDOH, ACR, HCFA, NRC, OSHA, FDA, etc.); Maintains electronic imaging, processing and monitoring equipment for quality imaging; Performs and remains competent in specialized procedures and general radiographic procedures, to include the use of portable and/or stationary fluoroscopy unit; Meets with vendors to discuss existing and new products. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of radiology physics; thorough knowledge of anatomical positioning; good knowledge of physiology; good knowledge of radiation safety; good knowledge of contrast safety; good knowledge of imaging procedures; good knowledge of contrast contra-indications; good knowledge of Hospital Information System (HIS)/ Radiology Information Systems (RIS) and Picture Archive and Communication System (PACS); working knowledge of sterile technique; skill in the operation of processing equipment and pressure injectors; ability to carry out complex oral and written instructions; ability to communicate effectively; ability to get along well with patients and co-workers; good judgment; physically capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from an approved school of Radiologic Technology and one (1) year of experience as a radiologic technologist. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a license and current registration to practice as a Radiologic Technologist in New York State at time of appointment; and Possession of a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification at time of permanent appointment. NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.
