Position Summary


What is Health Information Technology?

Health Information Technology (HIT) is the area of IT involving the design, build, use, and maintenance of information systems in the healthcare industry. Health Information Technology improves the efficiency and quality of care that nurses and physicians provide by implementing user-friendly applications for the clinical staff to adopt and operate within. Our goal here at Indiana University Health's Information Service department is to provide you a deeper understanding of one of the teams below that best fits you, but also still provide you high-level exposure to all the areas of Health Information Technology in our organization.


Which Health Information Technology area speaks to you?

Clinical Information Services

Build and maintain Cerner, IU Health's Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system, and other CIS applications

Collaborate with hospital leadership and clinical staff to ensure Cerner and other CIS tools meet their needs

Manage projects to increase clinical staff efficiency with Cerner and other CIS tools

Create tools that help doctors, nurses, and patients communicate outside the hospital and doctor office.

Decision Support

Design and implement business intelligence tools in the Microsoft BI Stack to assist both professional and clinical staff in deriving insights from data.

Promote self-service analytics to place more actionable data in the hands of those who need it.

Gather expertise around the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW), Azure, and other infrastructure components to support ongoing analytics initiatives.  

Execute, monitor, and optimize large data loads to build a single source of truth from application data across IU Health.

Enterprise Business Applications

Utilize technical and project management skills to develop, deliver, and support applications

Build and support applications for Finance, Human Resources, Employee Benefits, Payroll, Supply Chain, Legal, eHealth, and IU Health Physicians

Support applications include some of the following- Kronos, EPSi, PeopleFluent, Physician Information Exchange, and Oracle


Deploy and support the information technology infrastructure for the organization, which includes networking, telecommunications, compute, storage, virtualization, device management, service management, content, and productivity management.

Deploy and support technologies that implement our cybersecurity policies.

Major vendors include Cisco, Dell/EMC, VMWare, Microsoft

Information Security

Provide risk management, processes, and policies to support teams to ensure they securely configure, test, and assess devices, applications, and information technology services

Apply cyber security skills to defend and prevent against issues such as compromised user accounts, network security events, and organization-wide phishing scams

Protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of IU Health data from those with malicious intent

Project & Portfolio Management

Provides oversight and accountability in the planning, execution, and implementation of IU Health projects to ensure that each project is delivered on-time, at/under budget, and delivers agreed upon scope.

Manage a Portfolio of projects to ensure projects are identified, prioritized, executed, and delivered in a way that delivers maximum results to the IU Health organization.

Utilize standard project & portfolio management processes to ensure projects are executed & delivered efficiently and with the highest degree of quality. 

Develop clear & concise project & portfolio status reports to keep key Stakeholders and Executives informed of schedules, budgets, risks, and issues.

System Delivery

Manage system initiative projects that impact all areas of the organization

Maintain budgets for large capital projects

Coordinate teams across the organization to ensure open communication and a successful project go-live


How can you help in the mission of IU Health's Information Services?

All interns are not only assigned to a specific area, but also a specific project that the team is working on to fully experience the application of the tasks involved. Interns will collaborate with leadership and other team members during their time spent in Information Services. They will actively participate in team meetings and report out on assigned projects. Interns will be responsible for items such as data collection, managing project logistics, preparing project materials, and communicating across multiple teams. Internship assignments are comprised of exposure to many parts of the business function, providing the opportunity to gain high level healthcare industry knowledge, better understanding of departmental concepts, and sustained outcomes for your team and department leaders.




  • Requires proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Requires current enrollment in Associate's Degree Program or above; Business-related majors required.
  • Requires GPA of 3.2 or above on a scale of 4.0.
