Under the leadership of the Director of Operations Patient Access and  supervision of the Ambulatory RN Clinical Nurse manager, the Access Nurse is responsible for facilitating physician referrals and triaging the health care needs of patients and documenting the appropriate disposition of each case via telephonic clinical assessment and health education.  The Access Nurse will work collaboratively with Physician office teams and the System Patient Access(SPA) department to produce a high level of customer service in delivering timely referrals and improving the referral process. The Access Nurse will serve as the clinical expert for Patient Access and SPA Telehealth nursing by providing services for a variety of patients.



  • BSN preferred
  • 2 years or more of Neurosurgery  experience
  • Demonstrates clinical expertise with specific patient populations to provide care appropriate to the age and development level of the patients served.
  • Collects medical information from physician's offices and patients via Cerner, telephone and faxes.  Documents initial and ongoing telephone conversations with patients and/or family.  Reviews medical records and utilizes the EMR for proper documentation.
  • Will foster positive relationships with referring office staff, increase utilization to the organization's clinical service.  This position establishes a high level of service by working closely with practices and referring physicians to triage register and schedule patients to the correct clinical area. 
  • Has the ability to consistently track, organize and prioritize the triage workload with the ability to sort through routine and stat referrals while keeping both the provider and patient informed in a timely manner.


Current State of Indiana license as a Registered Nurse

Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred with 3 yrs. experience and a minimum of 2 years nursing experience in Cardiology


Basic Life Support certification

Requires excellent verbal and interpersonal skills

Ability to remain calm in stressful situations

Requires good time management

Requires experience with a multi-line phone; intermediate level of computer skills and proficiency in typing.

Requires ability to thoroughly acquire knowledge of the organization physicians; programs; and services.

Requires ability to deal with all levels of staff; including physicians; hospital administrators, patients, and nursing staff in an efficient and professional manner.

Requires ability to assess problems and make decisions.

Requires ability to take initiative and meet objectives.

Requires high degree of critical thinking and attention to detail.

Requires some travel between physician offices so Driver's license required.
