Reports to department leadership. Under general supervision, the Hospital Medical Coder III is responsible for the collection of relevant, pertinent, accurate and timely profile data configured and/or abstracted from all hospital case types including complex medical/surgical inpatient cases such as neonates, cardiac surgery, multiple trauma, etc. This includes effective use of relevant coding systems as well as recognizing what data can be abstracted, presented and interpreted for effective use throughout the hospital network. Performs other duties as assigned.
Experience, Education and Training Minimum: RHIT, CPCH, CCS or an Associate's degree in a related health care field required. Inpatient coding experience to include 3 years coding complex inpatient cases. Medical record abstracting experience required. Must possess knowledge of ICD9, DRGs, CPT/HCPCS, and outpatient groupers for reimbursement and statistical reporting. Knowledge of CPT procedure code modifier use, E&M leveling and outpatient groupers required. Knowledge of billing/claims guidelines, and ability to use various coding methodologies to code clinical diagnosis and procedures.
