Works as a productive member of a multi-disciplinary treatment team, and utilizes appropriate diagnostic and treatment techniques in order to provide direct care for patients of all ages with speech, language, cognitive and/or swallowing deficits in accordance with ASHA's generally accepted scope of practice. Provides education and support to patients and families regarding diagnosis and treatment, reports the status of patients through appropriate documentation and verbal communication procedures, maintains departmental equipment and assists in requesting new equipment, evaluates the speech, language, cognitive and/or swallowing status as appropriate, as well as screens the hearing of patients who are referred for Speech-Language Pathology services, and determines an appropriate diagnosis. Administers appropriate treatment to patients, maintains and completes accurate documentation of patient and departmental records, assures an appropriate continuum of patient care through effective communication procedures.
Must possess a Masters degree, or its equivalent in Speech-Language Pathology, with adequate course credentials, and be certified clinically competent (or eligible to be certified) by the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association. Must be able to develop rapport with all types of patients and their family members and have the ability to communicate professionally and effectively in interactions with other staff, supervisors, patients and family members. Must possess suitable interpersonal skills to interact effectively with sick and/or anxious patients of all ages in order to gain their participation and allay apprehension. Must be able to provide effective education to patients and family members. Must possess analytical abilities and sound knowledge of the field of speech-language pathology necessary for the effective formulation of treatment plans, implementation of care and appropriate documentation regarding the patient's condition and response to treatment. Additionally, the clinician must be able to identify limitations in own clinical knowledge, and seek guidance as appropriate.
