  • POSITION RESPONSIBLITIES: Responsible for general supervision of daily operational functions for the outpatient coding staff in the Health Information Management Department across both campuses.  This will include scheduling of staff, prioritizing the daily workflow, supervising performance and staff development.  Position will act as a department resource on documentation and billing requirements and coding. Will perform quality audits to ensure accuracy of coding and reduce the risk of noncompliance with third party payer requirements.  Will assist in the development and updating of policies and procedures related to the coding area.  Coordinate compliance/education initiatives with other departments as needed.  Help to reduce or eliminate incentives for audits by insurance companies.  Assist the Coding Manager with other managerial functions as needed. 


    A.    Ensures all outpatient medical records are coded and abstracted within three days of date of service.

    B.    Assists with implementation of ICD-10.

    C.   Trains new coders in coding techniques and in the use of all HIM systems.

    D.   Acts as a resource for coding questions by staff.

    E.    Responsible for supervising the activities of the Outpatient Coding Assistant.

    F.    Performs duties and special projects as necessary for the HIM Director and Coding Manager.

    G.   Performs coding audits quarterly for coding staff in order to maintain quality standards and offer feedback to management as well as staff.

    H.   Performs in-service education to physicians and coding staff as required.

    I.      Assigns ICD-9 CM procedure codes as well as diagnosis codes to outpatient records as required. 

    J.    Works closely with the Patient Accounts and Revenue Cycle areas to clarify coding questions and validate billing and documentation practices.

    K.    Assists with outside DRG claim denials to ensure proper follow up.

    L.    Identifies and recommends changes with documentation practices to improve specificity of site, side, laterality. 

    M.   Organizes and prioritizes responsibilities to complete daily work assignments.

    N.   Responsible for working knowledge of all Coding Clinics impacting department workflow.

    O.   Responsible for working knowledge of HIM Dept. Paragon, Cerner and 3M systems.

    P.    Reports on a regular basis to the Coding Manager on the development of employees, or any areas of concern regarding performance across both campuses.


    Q.   Communicates clearly and regularly the goals of the department with staff.

    R.   Helps to maintain and update all training materials used by the coding staff.

    S.    Helps train new staff and current coding staff within the department.

    T.    Responsible to cover both campuses through the week to supervise each outpt. coding area.

    U.   Will assist the Coding Assistant  in retrieving diagnoses from providers for medical necessity after two faxing attempts.

    V.    Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.   


    CCS required.
