  • Position Summary:  This position is responsible for providing direct and indirect patient care in the department setting. Performs tasks under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse in charge of the team and/or unit. Assists the nursing staff in providing care to Emergency Department patients from admission to discharge.  Participates in performance improvement activities of the department and daily management of infection prevention and control activities.

    Primary Functions:

    1.     Provides clerical support necessary for the efficient functioning of the patient care unit. Enters orders in the hospital computer system for tests and procedures.  Answers phones.  Assists with coordination of admissions and transfers.  Maintains a clean, safe environment.  


    2.     Assists RN with patient care procedures.  Draws blood.  Performs EKG’s.  Provides patient with hospital gown.  Places patient on monitors. Provides additional care as required to meet the personal needs and comfort of assigned patients.


    3.     Maintains log books in the department and assists in recording information for performance improvement activities.


    4.     Under the direction of the nurse manager, orders, receives and stores supplies and equipment.


    5.     Provides basic nursing care to non-acutely ill and acutely ill patients within the Nursing Assistant’s scope of practice that includes actions that meet psychosocial needs and physical needs.


    6.     Communicates to the RN any observed changes in patient status and responses.  Maintains awareness of the needs of the pediatric, geriatric and general patient population.


    7.     Treats patients and families with dignity and respect.  Ensures confidentiality of patient records.  Interacts   professionally with patients and families and provides explanations and verbal reassurance as necessary.



    Other Duties As Assigned:

    Accepts other duties/responsibilities as assigned.


    Minimum Qualifications:


    High school diploma or the equivalent preferred.

    BLS or CPR equivalent within 30 days of hire required

    Paramedic or completion of paramedic training preferred.



    Prior patient care assistant experience preferred.  Previous experience with blood draws.


    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    Basic knowledge of computers.  Must be able to read, write and communicate effectively in English.  Demonstrates flexibility, ability to multi-task and effective organizational and interpersonal skills. Able to function efficiently with constant change.
