Typically Reports to Supervisor or Manager
Position Summary Performs any combination of following key responsibilities under the direction of physician or physician extender to assist in examination and treatment of patients.
Interviews patients and records chief complaint on patient's chart.
Measures vital signs, such as pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height, and records information on patients' charts.
Prepares treatment rooms for examination of patients. Drapes patients with covering and positions instruments and equipment.
Hands instruments and materials to doctor as directed. Cleans and sterilizes instruments. Inventories and orders medical supplies and materials.
Under direct supervision, assists physician or physician extender with injections, procedures, treatments, patient education and routine tests.
Under direct supervision, may enter orders such as laboratory, radiology, and referrals.
Under direct supervision of the prescribing provider, may send prescriptions electronically to the patient's preferred pharmacy.
May require access to storage areas where medications are kept and carry out procedures that require the use of non-prescription medications.
May under the direct supervision of a physician, operate x-ray, electrocardiograph (EKG), and other equipment to administer routine diagnostic tests or calls medical facility or department to schedule patients for tests.
Notifies patient of lab results. May place and receive patient-related telephone calls.
May routinely perform one or more of the following activities under general supervision: Schedules appointments, receives money for bills, keeps x-ray and other medical records, performs secretarial tasks, and completes insurance forms. May key data into computer to maintain office and patient records. May keep billing records, enter financial transactions into bookkeeping ledgers, and compute and mail monthly statements to patients.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Associate's degree in Medical Assisting or High School Diploma and previous Medical Assistant or related experience.
Driver's License Required
Valid driver's license, an acceptable three-year motor vehicle record as defined by the Acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) Chart, and a certificate of auto insurance.
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) by American Association of Medical Assistants; or Registered Medical Assistant by American Medical Technologists; or NRCMA by National Association for Health Professionals; or Certification through the National Health Career Association; or the American Registry of Medical Assistants; or the American Association of Medical Personnel. Continuous active membership with accrediting association required. BLS or BCLS required.
Lifting Requirements: must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.
Physical Demands: regularly stand, walk, sit, reach with hands or arms, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, and hear.
