Job Summary: Medical interpreters work with limited English proficiency (LEP) and Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHOH) patients in our hospitals, physicians offices, clinics, rehabilitation facilities, nursing homes and mental health clinics within the health system. Medical interpreters act as bridge between patients and health care professionals by listening to the health care worker and orally translating information into a patients native language. The medical interpreter then translates the patients response back to the professional, using proper medical terminology. Interpreters may translate such information as the reason for a medical visit, past medical history and family medical history, as well as explaining medical and surgical procedures, giving medical care instructions, providing drug information and scheduling follow-up appointments. During the visit, cultural misunderstandings between a professional and patient may occur however the medical interpreters must anticipate these events and try to avoid them. Interpreters also are privy to sensitive information, so they must maintain patient confidentiality at all times.  

Education: High School, GED or Equivalent required; proof of Interpreter training in an accredited program with Certification/Registry as listed below can be used in lieu of education requirement.

Certification: Certification/Registry is required. Must have successfully completed training and be certified or registered with an accredited interpreter association or one of the following preferred: American Translators Association Certification National Association of the Deaf Certification Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf U.S. Department of State – Three test series results Associate Healthcare Interpreter: (For interpreters of languages other than Spanish, Arabic, and Mandarin) Certified Healthcare Interpreter (CCHI): (For interpreters of Spanish, Arabic, and Mandarin) National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI)

Experience: One year of interpreting experience is required. The candidate will be fluent in English and a target language. BA/BS in healthcare preferred. Good communication skills and knowledge of the candidate's cultural community are essential qualities in the successful candidate.
