Job Summary: Directly reporting to the System Director of Safety & Protection, the RHS Life Safety Engineer is responsible for developing and implementing a health system fire and life safety program. Key accountabilities include developing and implementing systems and programs to protect the health system buildings for fire hazards and ensure compliance with applicable sections of the Virginia Code of Regulations, NFPA, EPA, DNV and Local building codes. Works under the guidance of the Director, Safety and Protection Management to investigate, evaluate, plan, develop, inspect, coordinate and implement life safety and fire safety programs to ensure the safety of assets, employees, patients and visitors at all RHS facilities. Ensures that RHS facilities are within compliance with NFPA, National and Local Fire Safety Standards, OSHA and other applicable state, federal and regulatory codes governing building life/fire safety. Reviews life safety drawings and surveys buildings for compliance of life/fire safety equipment. Serves as primary liaison with Local fire departments, building code officials for interpretation and regulatory inspectors or surveyors. Is considered the subject matter expert and consultant and primary person to follow-up on life safety matters involving RHS. Conducts fire safety training and encourages staff to maintain fire safety through training programs and teaching opportunities.

Education: Bachelor's degree in fire science, engineering, management, healthcare or related field required.

Licensure/Certification: Valid Virginia license with acceptable driving record required. Must be CPR certified within 6 months of employment. Must have NFPA certified Life Safety Specialist for Health Care Facilities certification within 2 years of employment. Board of Certified Healthcare Safety or Life Safety Management- Virginia Preferred Basic Life Safety Specialist- Virginia preferred  

Experience: 5 years of experience in Life Safety, fire safety, healthcare, or similar field required. 2 years of Supervisor/Manager experience preferred. Experience in life and fire safety programs, inspection and investigation processes, interpreting codes and regulations, construction design with familiarity with life safety drawings, conducting training and drills/exercises, working with inspectors and regulatory agencies.
