Patient Access Specialist
Education: Documented verification of graduation from high school or equivalent secondary education is required. Associates Degree in healthcare administration or related field is preferred.
Certification: Certified Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA) Certification is preferred.
Experience required: Medical terminology training and at least two year prior patient access or very closely related clerical experience in a healthcare setting are preferred. This position requires excellent interpersonal skills as well as technical expertise in all aspects of health care benefits including HMO's, PPO, indemnity plans as well as Medicare, Medicaid, and other local or State programs. Must also have a working knowledge of third party benefits limitiations. A high degree of attention to detail, accuracy, and confidentiality are necessary to work in this position.

Newly hired employees must commit to working two full weeks of day shifts for training purposes, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday for the first two weeks of employment.

Primary duty of the Patient Access Specialist is ensuring high quality of patient registrations by obtaining thorough and accurate information in a timely and efficient manner. This position also requires the Patient Access Specialist to interact and coordinate with other hospital departments and/or Physician staff to ensure quality care for all patients. The Patient Access Specialist serves as a patient resource in matters concerning up-front collections based upon covered benefits and in accordance with hospital policy. This position will be in compliance with EMTALA and HIPPA rules and regulations. The Specialist will interview the patient/guarantor to obtain complete demographic, clinical, billing, insurance, and financial information. Must explain processes and forms to patients prior to securing signatures and ensures that all documents are properly signed and witnessed as required. Must maintain and apply knowledge of current registration requirements. The Specialist will obtain and scan the patient's ID and insurance cards. Each Specialist is expected to maintain a 3% or less weekly error rate. The Specialist will be crosstrained to work all areas of Patient Access including both Patient Registration and Switchboard.
