  • JOB SUMMARY AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  Under direction of professional nurse, performs patient care activities to meet the personal needs and comfort of patients, assisting members of the health care team, and maintaining a clean, safe environment.


    1.            Performs and assists with various aspects of patient care under general supervision.  Work performed evidences completion of tasks as shown in patient outcomes, documentation and/or completed work.

    a.      Determines nature of patient's visit.

    b.      Takes and records patient's vital signs recording temperature, pulse, blood pressure and respiration.

    c.       Prepares patient for diagnostic examination and treatment.

    d.      Performs basic lab procedures as instructed.  Prepares and forwards specimens (urine, stool and sputum).

    e.      Assists with medical procedures and treatments as appropriate, including comforting patients, handing instruments and supplies to physician, wound care, injections, applying bandages and hot cold packs, etc.

    f.        Observes and reports patient's response to interventions/treatment.  Completes all documentation requirements in a timely manner.

    g.      Provides one-on-one to patients requiring close observation and monitoring to ensure their safety and prevention of injury.

    h.      Obtains medical and lab records.

    i.        Completes all necessary documentation in patient's medical records in accordance with the clinic's charting policy.

    j.        Communicates unit activities, needs and problems to appropriate staff regarding patient care.  Follows-up with patient/family member/hospital staff as required.

    k.       Performs other procedures specific to clinical area.

    l.        Demonstrates knowledge and skills to provide care, maintains clinical competency and meets patient population needs in a caring, compassionate and sensitive manner.


    2.      Performs technical procedures as delegated and after observation by the RN/LPN according to unit policy:

    ·      Takes and records patient's vital signs.

    ·      Takes and records temperature, pulse, blood pressure and respiration.

    ·      Applies heat and cold.

    ·      Takes and records height and weight.

    ·      Works within isolation precautions.

    ·      Performs pre/post procedural care as delegated.

    ·      Applies dressings, compresses, bandages and preoperative skin preps.

    ·      Assists others in performance of more complicated treatments or diagnostic procedures as requested/assigned.

    ·      Performs other procedures specific to clinical area.


    3.      Provides support to staff:

    5.        Prepares and maintains required records, reports and files for administrative and compliance purposes.  Maintains patient medical records; documents patient status and care given; performs charting duties; records activities and observations.  Utilizes patient computer systems to enter and retrieve data.


    6.        Lifts, positions and transports patients utilizing proper technique and equipment.  Accompanies and remains with patient for clinical test or procedures in other departments/areas.  Transports charts, specimens, equipment and supplies. 


    7.        Responds appropriately to emergency situations and notifies appropriate personnel.


    8.      Provides coverage for relief and absences as required.



    MACHINES OR EQUIPMENT OPERATED:  Computer, patient care equipment utilized on unit, stretcher, wheelchairs, beds, lifting equipment.



    EDUCATION:  Completion of an approved nursing assistant or medical assistant program. Qualified by education, training or experience to work with the infant, adolescent, adult and/or geriatric patient as specialty assignment dictates.


    EXPERIENCE:  One (1) year consecutive experience as nursing assistant may be utilized in lieu of certificate.  


    LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION:  Current CPR/BLS certification required. Current TN Nurse Aide Certification required.



    • Demonstrated knowledge and skills to provide patient care, maintain clinical competency and meet age-specific patient needs within the unit to include: general hygiene, vitals/measurements, patient transport, environment and infection control practices. 
    • Demonstrated ability to follow written and oral instructions, plan and organize work to be done, effectively record and reflect observations, react and perform under stress in emergency situations, and communicate effectively with unit personnel, medical/hospital staff, patient, family and others to ensure optimal patient care.
