Senior System Administrators at Laureate Institute for Brain Research (LIBR) are hybrid software/systems engineers who ensure that LIBR's services run smoothly and have the capacity for future growth. They are embedded in LIBR's development and infrastructure teams, and are core participants in every significant IT engineering effort underway within the organization. While relevant industry experience is important, ultimately it is less important than your demonstrated abilities and attitude.

Responsibilities

  • Own back-end services like our 1.75PB Ceph storage cluster, Spectra Logic T950 tape library, MySQL backends to our Redcap research database, infrastructure components like routers, firewalls, or switches, and everything in between
  • Write and review code, develop documentation and capacity plans, and debug the hardest IT problems LIBR faces
  • Together with your engineering team, you will share an on-call rotation and be an escalation contact for high impact service incidents

Minimum Qualification

  • BS or MS in Computer Science, Engineering, a related technical discipline or equivalent experience
  • Extremely sound knowledge of UNIX and TCP/IP network fundamentals
  • Ability to code well in at least one language (even if it is not one that LIBR uses)
  • Ability to rapidly learn new development languages (PHP, Python, C++, and Java are all heavily used)
  • Ability to pick up new software, frameworks, and APIs quickly
  • Sharp and tenacious troubleshooting skills: you can fix anything
  • Good knowledge of basic large-scale deployment planning
  • Configuration and maintenance of common services such as Apache, MySQL (bonus points for Percona), NFS, Samba, DHCP, NTP, SSH, and DNS
  • Good communications skills
  • Detail oriented and careful

Interview Process

  • Brief (15 minute) call to gauge personality, describe the position, and learn about the candidate's skills
  • On-site or remote (1-1.5 hours) technical interview covering programming, networking, and system design and debugging fundamentals.
    • This will require the candidate to write programs and design solutions to problems presented during the interview
  • On-site visit (1-2+ hours) with 50/50 mix of technical whiteboarding and meeting organization stakeholders
