    Job Summary: The Safety Sitter works under the direct supervision of the Professional Registered Nurse to observe and provide appropriate diversion activities for the patient at the direction of the RN responsible for the patient. The sitter observes for harmful or dangerous actions/ behaviors of the patient such as sudden rapid breathing, restlessness, aggressiveness, and/or attempting to get out of bed. The sitter seeks immediate assistance from the health team to secure the patient's safety. Prior to seeking assistance, the sitter may employ the following actions: providing pillow positioning, reinforcing the need to stay in bed, providing a drink if appropriate. Conversational interaction is essential between sitter and patient; minimal patient physical contact is required. This position is an important component of the continuum of care as is provided to maintain the safety and protect the well-being of patients at risk for injury. The sitter is also responsible for completing a variety of departmental specific tasks to assist with optimal department safety and functioning.

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Demonstrated ability to follow instruction and communicate clearly. Minimum language, minimum math, and basic reasoning ability skill required. Ability to write, read, speak, and comprehend English. Must be able to demonstrate self control, both verbal and physical under stressful conditions. Compliance with attendance policy is required. Ability to work weekends, holidays, rotating shifts, and additional hours is required. Ability to maintain confidential and sensitive information.

    Education: High School graduate or GED required.

    Experience: No previous experience required.

    Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Requires sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires minimal lifting (less than 5 pounds). Requires some exposure to communicable diseases or body fluids.
