The Unit Clerk maintains the unit administrative efficiency and effectiveness within accepted guidelines under direction of the professional staff; interacts with others in a respectful and courteous manner. Documents accurately and in a timely manner. Communicates and collaborates with other healthcare team members. Major Duties: Meets organizational expectations as defined by the Employee Standards of Performance, hospital and department policies and procedures, and the hospital’s strategic goals. Verbalizes a clear understanding of continuous quality improvement and customer satisfaction measures and actively participates in improvement initiatives. Provides secretarial support to assist the unit and organization in its daily activities, i.e. transcribes accurately physician orders and entry to the system software, creates and maintains tasks related to patient chart order, chart accuracy, and charts current data, keeps all necessary lists and schedules, answers phones in a professional manner and takes messages/directs calls as appropriate, utilizes fax and photocopier as needed, processes a variety of information for new admissions, re-admissions and transfers, removes documents from charts according to established format, and obtains old records from Health Information Resources (HIR). Accepts delegated responsibilities on assigned shift. Documents and maintains patient records. Provides patients and family members with information as appropriate. Assists in the orientation and training of new and tenured unit secretary personnel and serves as a resource to other staff under the supervision of the RN. Responds to internal/external disaster as directed. Picks up and delivers medications from Pharmacy to Nursing Unit. Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure smooth operation of the organization. Education/Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Preferred: Knowledge of Medical Terminology. Previous hospital experience. Previous secretarial experience. Required: Working knowledge of typing and computer skills. Demonstration of phone etiquette. Demonstration of time management and organizational skills. Successful completion of mandatory requirements including unit proficiencies/competencies. Demonstration of effective problem solving, decision-making, interpersonal, and team work skills. Demonstration of effective verbal and written communication. Demonstration of positive customer service. High school diploma or equivalent.
