Job Details:
  • Purpose of Job:  To apply and promote contemporary, evidence-based infection prevention and practice standards to programs and projects across the health system.  


    Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Acquires and maintains current knowledge and skill in the area of infection prevention, control and epidemiology.
      Collects, reviews, and analyzes surveillance data related to communicable diseases, healthcare acquired infections and organisms of concern.  Coordinates and maintains basic data sets for infection prevention programs. Refer to Appendix A for Core job duties.
    • Conducts surveillance and/or investigate potential infectious outbreaks within the Health System.  Based on trends, establishes prevention interventions and new surveillance as indicated based on organizations data and literature.
    • Produces line lists, charts and graphs, and other summaries related to HAI data, surveillance and performance improvement activities for review, presentations and reports.
    • Assesses educational and training needs, develop, coordinate and provide education and training related to Infection Prevention, including Associate/Nursing/Resident orientation, for the Sparrow Health System, and general public.
    • Functions as liaison with public health agencies and other community organizations such as schools as related to infection prevention activities, outbreaks and reportable conditions.
    • Provides consultation to Occupational Health Service and other Health System units and committees regarding occupational health, infectious exposures, sharp safety and outbreak investigations.
    • Assists with emergency preparedness and participates in emergency preparedness exercises.
    • Conducts Infection Control Risk Assessments for construction and renovation projects and assist in avoiding/reducing infectious hazards related to construction, renovation and maintenance.  Monitor prevention measure implementation.  Acquire and maintain current knowledge of construction and design standards as well as related infection prevention practice.
    • Maintains current knowledge and carry out Infection Control requirements as specified by OSHA/MIOSHA regulations, designated accreditation organizations, health department licensing and regulations, and public health guidelines.
    • Acts as a resource to the general public and medical community regarding infection prevention.
    • Participates in Health System based committees and provides infection prevention guidance as indicated.
    • Provides leadership for and facilitate the Sparrow Hospital Infection Control Resource (Liaison) Committee program and related activities such as safety fairs and associate competency fairs.
    • Assists with Infection Prevention policy and procedure development and distribution.
    • Participates in performance improvement studies related to infection prevention and epidemiology.  Coordinates corrective action plans when appropriate.
    • Assists with health system product evaluation and selection.
    • Serves as a role model for consistent demonstration of Sparrow Health System's Customer Service Behavioral Standards of Performance, by respecting the Privacy and Confidentiality of those we serve.
    • Demonstrates knowledge and respects patient, service provider, organizational confidentiality and HIPAA Security procedures and protocols as defined under the HIPAA Privacy and Security Procedures.
    • Follows established HIPAA privacy procedures when using and/or disclosing protected health information.
    • Maintains and protects members rights under the HIPAA Privacy Standards.
    • Serves as a role model for consistent demonstration of Sparrow Health System's Customer Service Behavioral Standards of Performance, by respecting the Privacy and Confidentiality of those we serve.
    • Demonstrates knowledge and respects patient, service provider, organizational confidentiality and HIPAA Security procedures and protocols as defined under the HIPAA Privacy and Security Procedures.
    • Follows established HIPAA privacy procedures when using and/or disclosing protected health information.
    • Maintains and protects members rights under the HIPAA Privacy Standards.

    Working Conditions:

    • Primarily office with less than 50% of work in a clinical or healthcare setting. 
    • Potential exposure to infectious hazards.
    • May lift up to 20 pounds as part of daily work.
    • Patient, patient family, visitor and volunteer interactions may occur on a daily basis.  Contact with patients and environment may include potential for exposure to blood borne pathogens, infectious diseases or hazardous substances.
    • Daily computer keyboard, data entry, email, EMR-related review work and monitor use, electronic literature searches, telephone use.
    • Sitting for long periods of time.  Daily extensive walking through hospital.
    • Must be able to transport self to other health system areas including offsite facilities as needed including construction sites and other restricted access areas.
    • Some travel time and irregular hours.

    Knowledge, Skills, Experience Required:

    ·         Bachelors degree in nursing, microbiology, public health or epidemiology or equivalent required.

    ·         Graduate course work in biostatistics or related field with ability to do data analysis preferred.

    ·         Board Certified in Infection Control and Epidemiology through the Certification Board for Infection Control and Prevention or capable of obtaining in 2 years from date of hire.

    ·         Project management, research, or performance improvement experience required.  

    ·         Previous experience with Excel, word processing and data analysis programs required.

    ·         Good verbal and written communication skills.

    ·         Ability to work well with others individually and in groups as a team member.

    ·         Ability to provide on-call support as assigned for 24/7 infection prevention department coverage for health system.   ·
