. Principle Duties and Responsibilities: All of the following duties are under the direction of a RN.
A. Ambulates the patient; accompanies the patient when he/she needs to be transported to other departments; assists with meals if there are no dysphagia problems; and maintains a calm, clean, and safe patient environment.
B. Documents observations accurately and timely on correct forms. Immediately communicates significant information to Licensed Professional such as changes in the patient’s behavior or condition.
C. Remains alert, calm, and professional. Maintains clear visual sight of the patient at all times - including in the restroom
D. As directed by the RN allows the family members assume responsibility of 1:1 observation during their visit.
E. Does NOT take independent action/s with patients.
F. Must be able to understand the speech of patients and care givers and communicate verbally so as to relay significant events and potentially life threatening patient safety situations.
G. Maintains patient confidentiality.
H. Demonstrates ICARE values (behavioral values, cooperation, and positive interpersonal relations when interacting with all persons within the Hospital environment and community.
I. Maintains Hospital standards by participating in mandatory in-services and mandatory Hospital/departmental requirements.
Department Description: This group of associates float to all units within the Sparrow Health System. Flexibility and organizational skills are needed as the patient safety sitter may work in multiple different units throughout a single shift.
Job Requirements: High School diploma or GED. Must be able to read and write fluently in English for documentation purposes. Completion of Patient Sitter orientation at Sparrow and current experience as patient safety sitter. At times may need to be available on short notice. Interpersonal skills to effectively and appropriately communicate with patients, families, physicians, and other Sparrow Health System associates. Physically able to and successful demonstration of patient lifting, moving, pulling, pushing and transporting of patients. Under the direction of an RN, assists with all aspects of patient care related to the duties and responsibilities of a patient safety sitter. Effective communication necessary to assist the patient and health care provider in delivering safe and effective patient care. Maintains all hospital standards for education, in-services, and departmental requirements.
Physical Requirements / Working Conditions: Exposure to latex and use of latex 100% of the time. Extensive lifting, walking, pushing and pulling associated with patient care. Potential for exposure to blood borne pathogens and chemicals. Unpredictable meal times scheduled around patient care needs. Float to all patient care areas as patient care needs arise. Extensive sitting including in the dark. "
