POSITION TITLE: Licensed Practical Nurse

POSITION SUMMARY:

A Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is a licensed health care provider who provides nursing care in the home setting under the direction of an RN. There is no independent component to the LPN role.

The Nurse Practice Act defines the practice of a LPN as "performing tasks and responsibilities within the framework of case finding, health teaching, health counseling, and provision of supportive and restorative care under the direction of a registered nurse or licensed physician, dentist, or other licensed health care provider legally authorized under this title and in accordance with the commissioner's regulations."

EDUCATION, TRAINING, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE:

Graduate of an accredited school for Licensed Practical Nurses holding a current licensure from the State of New York with a minimum of one year recent med/surg experience.

Participates in orientation and continuing education, updating and maintaining knowledge and skills related to specific areas of expertise. Completes population specific competency annually on populations served as identified in scope of care and service.

SPECIAL EQUIPMENT, SKILLS OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Current BLS/CPR certification.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND HAZARDS:

Clinical setting – Exposure Class I – Routine or potential exposure to blood, body fluids, excretions or secretions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Medium work: Must be able to lift 25 pounds frequently; occasionally lifting a maximum of 50 pounds. Will require the ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, twist squat and reach.

WORK CONTACT GROUP:

All services, employees, medical staff, patients, visitors, vendors, various regulatory and professional agencies.

SUPERVISED BY:

Registered Nurses, physician, or other authorized health care provider.

SUPERVISES:

LPN's, nursing assistants, and other unlicensed personnel

CAREER PATH:

Level II status upon completion of a medical administration course.

RN upon graduation from accredited school for registered nurses
