Provides administrative supervision for multiple laboratory sections. Manages the use of resources and is accountable for day to day operation.  Assesses routine laboratory operations and initiates appropriate corrective action in order to maintain and improve laboratory services and patient care.


  • Organizes the functions in areas of responsibility through appropriate departmental delineation, delegation of duties, and prioritization of activities; maintains effective communication within and between all areas of accountability.
  • Monitors overall productivity of respective areas of responsibility; improves productivity through consolidation of activities, delegation of functions, and or implements alternatives in skill mix while ensuring competency of the care/ service providers and without negatively impacting the quality of care/ service.
  • Functions as the administrative supervisor of multiple shifts or multiple laboratory sections. Also functions as a technical and/ or general supervisor as defined in Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988.
  • Supervises lead medical technologists, medical technologists, phlebotomists, lab assistants, clerks and other non-licensed personnel.
  • Assures hospital compliance with federal, state, local government laws and regulations, accrediting agency standards and hospital policies and procedures and medical staff rules and regulations; establishes, communicates and interprets hospital policy within areas of responsibility and recommends changes to the Lab Director.
  • Evaluates employee performance and provides counseling and disciplinary action when necessary.
  • Implements effective and ongoing programs in areas of responsibility to measure, assess, and improve the quality of care delivered to patient/ customers; collaborates with other organization leaders to plan, promote and conduct organization wide performance improvement activities; consistently achieves fundamental operational improvements using comparative information and benchmarking in conjunction with effective use of process improvement techniques.
  • Promotes communication and teamwork between hospital and laboratory departments.
  • Assures personnel are compliant with safety standards and infection control.
  • In the absence of the Lab Director, assumes their duties and responsibilities.
  • Responsible for all phases of laboratory functions under the supervision of the Medical Director and Laboratory Director.
  • Reports to the Lab Director.
  • Seeks assistance when necessary.




  • Los Angeles City Fire/Safety Card within 30 days of hire.
  • Must have a four year degree from an accredited college or university in science, medical technology, or a related field preferred.
  • Requires a valid current license issued from the State Department of Health as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist.


Work Experience:

  • Minimum of five years current and continuous experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in an acute care hospital
  • Three years of experience as a section supervisor or lead technologist.
  • Computer experience or course work in computer.


Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of the principles of basic clinical laboratory science.

  • Familiarity with the function and operation of laboratory instrument systems.

  • Problem solving, decision analysis and conflict management skills.

  • Word processing skills preferred.
