    • Job Summary
      • Responsible for managing the flow of patients through the ER system and Plaster Room System. Navigates patients, family and staff focusing on the overall patient length of stay (LOS). Functions as the central point of contact for the area Nurse Team Manager, staff, ancillary staff, ER Physicians and the Private Physicians. Remains constantly aware of all activity within the ER and the Plaster Room. Manages all interior and exterior communications within the department. Utilizes the ambulance radios, patient call system, lab printer and the computerized patient tracking system to assist in coordinating patient care. Job requires detail-oriented mentality and ability to work independently. Lack of consistency in detail could result in increased patient length of stay, lower staff productivity, increase LWBS rate and lower patient satisfaction. Uses own judgement and initiative to organize work and set priorities. Accountability is measured through patient LOS, LWBS rate, and patient satisfaction scores.
      • Performs basic technical patient care duties for patients of all ages: neonate, infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric, in accordance with University Hospital and State of Georgia practice guidelines for Basic Emergency Medical Technicians. See attached list - Procedures and Who Can Perform list for examples.
      • Able to rotate to Plaster Room /Orthopedic area or Emergency Services as needed. Assists private and staff Orthopedic surgeons in Orthopedic specialty procedures.
      • The provision of nursing care will be provided in an environment that embraces participation by the staff nurses, the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses and the ANA Practice Standards.

      • Demonstrates population-specific competencies (e.g. age-specific, cultural sensitivity, patient-centered communication) in performance of role.
    • Qualifications Required
      • Education:
        • High School education required. Successful completion of an EMT Program with all the knowledge and skills normally acquired through such a program.
      • Licensure/Certification:
        • Current certification as an EMT or Paramedic in the State of Georgia
        • BLS certification required or attained during orientation
        • Crisis Prevention Intervention required or attained within 1 year of hire
      • Experience:
        • Ability to perform patient care at level of normally acquired through one-year general working experience as an EMT
        • Two years progressively responsible patient care experience recommended. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of use of computer patient tracking systems, ambulance radios, patient call boxes and other office equipment. Must demonstrate excellent communication and organizational skills.
        • Completion of hospital and unit orientation program.
      • Knowledge, skills, abilities:
        • High level of interpersonal skills in order to effectively communicate with patients, families, visitors, team members, physicians, and other hospital personnel with who daily interactions must take place. Communication often requires high level of tact, sensitivity-awareness, and persuasiveness. Clear and concise verbal communication skills required for extensive telephone and personal interactions.
        • Ability to apply technical education in an emergency clinical setting. Has a basic knowledge of growth and development relevant to the ages of the patients served in an emergency clinical setting. Basic knowledge of the diseases and health care needs of the patient population served.
        • Basic level of analytical ability required in order to set priorities and coordinate patient care under the delegation of the emergency physician or registered nurse.
        • Advanced level of interpersonal skills necessary to work effectively with multiple personalities and levels of personnel.
        • Ability to perform efficiently and effectively under stress.
        • Ability to think critically, organize work and prioritize multiple tasks and responsibilities. Job requires detail oriented mentality and ability to work independently.         • Requires frequent intense concentration/attention to detail for reading and documentation, use equipment and computers, and to prioritize and provide patient care both direct and indirect.
        • High level of professionalism required in appearance and speaking manner. Must recognize importance of privacy and maintain confidentiality at all times.
        • Problem-solving skills sufficient to allow effective problem/conflict resolution.
        • Demonstrated traits of initiative and dependability required.
        • Philosophy of work and health care that is compatible with that of the mission of the institution.Work ethic compatible with that of the Emergency Department, Plaster Room / University Hospital management and demands of the unit.
        • Ability to interpret orders and performs orthopedic procedures independently.
    • Physical Demands
      • Standing for long periods - 6-8 hrs. Sitting for extended periods of time. Bending and stooping. Walking for long periods. Lifting of heavy patients. Sensory: sight to observe patient symptoms, auditory to hear patients, tactile to feel patient symptoms (warmth, induration), olfactory to smell disease specific smells.
