INTRODUCTION          

Under the supervision of the Medical Director, the Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) is responsible for the management of women's health care, focusing particularly on pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum period, family planning and the gynecologic needs of women.  The CNM exercises independent judgment related to patient assessment, diagnosis, treatment and counseling and consults and collaborates with other health care professionals.  The CNM provides full scope management of Unity Health Care (UHC) patients primarily in the community health center but also in the hospital, as assigned.

 

MAJOR DUTIES

·         Provides preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic services to patient.

·         Obtains medical histories and conducts physical examinations and evaluations as appropriate.

·         Orders and interprets laboratory/radiology testing, as appropriate.

·         Makes diagnoses and prescribes therapeutic measures of care including legend drugs and controlled substances.

·         Counsels patient and provides teaching for health maintenance and specific health problems.

·         Recognizes and manages common acute and chronic illnesses within his/her scope of practice according to standards of care.

·         Develops and participates in screening programs.

·         Provides immediate emergency care as needed and makes arrangement for transport to appropriate hospital or health service as necessary.

·         Collaborates frequently with the patient centered teams in regards treatments, referrals, and follow-up care of patients.

·         Makes appropriate referrals to specialists, 24-hour shelters, and hospitals.

·         Accepts referrals from other Specialists/Providers of UHC medical team and coordinates care with the referring providers.

·         Communicates frequently with CNM Coordinator and Medical Director of Ob/GYN.

·         Conducts peer review and quality improvement activities on a regular basis.

·         Covers labor and delivery at the Washington Hospital Center as assigned, and such hospitals as may be mutually agreed upon by Unity and Nurse Midwife.

·         Attends meetings as assigned.

·         Performs other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

·         Current DC CNM License, CDS and DEA registrations.

·         2-3 years of experience in ambulatory care setting with some contact with homeless patients (preferred).

·         Must be willing to accept "on call" duties on a regular rotation.

 

KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

·         Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

·         Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the field.
