Purpose and Scope:
Utilize ICD-10CM & CPT-4 to code inpatient and outpatient Medical Records

The full-time Coder (Medical Biller) will be responsible for coding inpatient and outpatient medical records utilizing current ICD-10CM and CPT-4 classification systems. Code selection is based on established coding principles and guidelines in a manner to support general billing and proiding for researchers. Ongoing responsibilities include data entry, database maintenance, and retrieval of information from reports and indices. The Outpatient Coder/Inpatient Coder may be trained to complete one or more specialty tasks assigned to the coding section, i.e. data control or reportign to legally mandated registries.
Representing the most highly trained technical staff in Virginia Hospital Center's Health Information Management Department, the Coder (Medical Biller) may be called upon to work on special studies with the Director as delegated through the Clinical Reimbursement Manager.
I. Position Requirements
Education, Experience and Certification: Educational background including college level courses in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, disease processes and pharmacology as well as ICD-10 and CPT-4 coding classification systems may be considered in lieu of experience for entry level (Coder I) designation.
Good communication skills, ability to function effectively in a team environment, PC expertise with encoder/grouper software and accurate data abstracting capabilities essential.
