Responsible for selection and coding of all reportable diagnoses and procedures for each hospital inpatient and/or hospital outpatient and/or physician practice medical record to assure optimal reimbursement, maintain data integrity and regulatory compliance. The Coding Specialist II has completed the coding training and must obtain an appropriate credential to reflect expertise in coding specific assigned patient types. The Level II Coding Specialist must obtain a hospital inpatient (RHIA, RHIT and/or CCS), hospital outpatient (RHIT, CCA, and/or CPC [CPC-H preferred]) or physician practice (CPC) certification within two years of employment.
Reports to appropriate Manager or Director at each facility.
GED/High School Diploma and active pursuit of degree and/or certification required if not already attained. Prefer one to two years of coding experience or commensurate clinical, medical office or health information management background. Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Active pursuit of one of the following depending on setting: Registered Health Information Admin.(RHIA), Registered Health Information Tech.(RHIT),Certified Coding Specialist (CCS),Certified Professional Coder (CPC),CPC-H preferred for hospital.
BLS is required for any RN, LPN, PCT, Patient Transporter or other direct patient care provider. Emergency Department, Intensive Care Units, PACU, Medical Emergency Team and Anesthesia require ACLS. Pediatrics, SICU, Emergency Department and Medical Emergency Team also require PALS
